Fake websites have become one of the favorite means for online criminals to harvest valuable personal and financial information of millions of people around the world. Phishing is the practice in which hackers create websites and emails that are identical to those of official entities (banks, government authorities, retailers, insurance companies, global-known non-profits, etc.) to deceive people and steal information that can be used later for their benefit.
Although most people worry about their credit card number being stolen, there is a lot more than card numbers that criminals can use. Russian private investigators say that the combination of full names, dates of birth and social security numbers in a massive database can be sold for a very good price in the dark web. By the time a victim learns that their identity has been stolen, the consequences can already be tragic. The risks are many, from having your bank accounts emptied, to finding out your identity was being used for a money laundering scheme or drug traffic.
What not to do if you want to avoid phishing scams
The first rule is to be skeptical with any email requesting to update your login or personal details, or to submit personal information. In order for the fake website to work, criminals need to attract people to it. The easiest way is to send mass emails to their potential victims and provide a link to their phishing site. The whole idea is to convince the people that they are being contacted by someone they trust (for example their bank). The website will look like the official one, and the difference in the domain will be imperceptible. Once the victim enters their login or personal information, they will have handed this data to the criminals, who will sell it to the highest bidder. Do not respond to unsolicited emails requesting passwords, social security numbers, or other sensitive information.
What to do instead of clicking on a link in an email?
Search online for the official website of the organization that is contacting you and check if there are any alerts of fraud. Even better, call and confirm if they are trying to reach you and why.
What if you are not familiar with the organization at all?
Request the assistance of a private investigator to verify that the company is real and reputable before taking any important steps. Local investigators in Moscow have also seen many cases of phishing scams on a corporate level. Foreign company executives are contacted by an alleged representative of a Russian company that wants to start a new business deal. A lot of executives fall victim because they thought they were getting the real deal, when in fact it was just a fake website and a fraudster. Before getting started with any business communications, hire a company background check investigation or complete due diligence to make sure the website and the known representative are legit and not just a trick. Research for safe ways to invest in Russia and do your due diligence.
