Every day at Russia PI, we receive dozens of inquiries from people who suspect they have been scammed, or who have a feeling that something is not right with their online relationship. In the past fourteen years we have seen many different cases: from absurd claims that turn out to be true, to incredibly elaborate scams that no one would suspect – the latter being the most frequent.

Russian dating scammers have dedicated their efforts to this “business” for long. They have polished their techniques over the years. They have incorporated experts in different fields, from document forgery, to hackers, website designers, lawyers, models, photographers, etc. When victims get involved with a scammer, they are not dealing with an isolated con artist in most cases. Victims of romance fraud in Russia are most of the times being manipulated by a whole network of criminals who have designed the optimal “dating experience” to trap innocent people and victims.

In this context, it becomes clear that dating scammers have a lot of resources, and that anyone can be a victim. Everyone from a school teacher, doctor, lawyer, police officer to a high-ranking member of the federal government.  Anyone who uses the internet is potentially at risk of being deceived by internet criminals.  If you are online, especially in social media or online dating sites, you are at risk.

How can a dating background check lower the risks?

Victims sometimes resist to the idea that being scammed is a possibility that could happen to them, or that the amazing person they fell in love with could be a criminal in real life. But ignoring the red flags only makes things worse, by putting them at risk of being scammed more than once.

A thorough and professional dating background check in Moscow is the best tool to reduce the risks. There are important factors that intervene in the quality of the investigation, and therefore in the evidence obtained.  A real background check is a real investigation, first and foremost.

A good dating background check is focused on official data from official sources, and not on questionable verifications. For example, many Russian brides and dating sites are not really places where lonely people socialize and meet each other, but rather websites controlled by gangs. When one of these websites “verifies” the identity of their users, they are just supporting their own cause.  A professional dating background check investigation must focus on public and government records that can support the subject’s claims, but also obtain real and meaningful evidence. To verify someone’s identity, evidence must be obtained to confirm birth records, address, ID, passport, etc.

Criminals can forge documents and use fake websites, but they cannot change official records. If there is no record of the subject in the birth registry, in public records, in the authorities that issue personal identification documents, or anywhere else, then it is obvious that the subject does not even exist and is just a criminal using a fake persona.  In other cases, criminals assume a real identity.

Another factor that intervenes in the quality of the investigation is the reputation, experience and professionalism of the investigating team.
